Typing a Markdown (.md) file in the editor is considered an URL

XMLWordPrintable

      Issue Summary

When using Jira's WYSIWYG editor, the text related to MarkDown Language Files (.md) are considered URLs and if using Link preferences as inline some texts may become something completely different.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Open an issue's description
      2. Paste the text README.md
      3. If your account is using Link preferences as inline, this will be changed to Changelog with a link to gitcareer.com.

      Expected Results

Markdown (.md) files should not be considered URLs.

      Actual Results

      • README.md becomes "Changelog" with a link to gitcareer.com
      • foo.md shows a link that doesn't work (no site registered with that)
      • gov.md redirects to a government site

      Workaround

Currently, you have three ways to avoid this:

      1. Use the Code formatting
      2. Use the Code Snippet (Display code with syntax highlighting)
      3. Manually remove the link/URL

      Extra consideration

It's important to highlight that ".MD" is the Internet country code top-level domain for Moldova introduced on March 24, 1994. Here's the wikipedia article about this.
