At the moment Option list in Jira cloud can hit a ceiling on the amount of options that can be utilized. There is a limit of 10000 option list via rest apis and the custom field will be loading slow.

Suggestion : Allow custom fields to utilize data from external sources to allow handling of larger data that will not impact the performance of the Jira site.
