Plaintext pasting of tables in the new editor comment section

    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      In the old comment renderer you were able to generate tables by pasting in formatted plaintext like so:

      || A | B |
      || C | D |

      However this feature no longer exists in the updated Jira comments view. Is there planned support for pasting markdown like tables and having them rendered in the fabric comment? Or is this feature not coming to the new issue view?

            May 2024 and pasting markdown still doesn't work with tables.

            Tried with Firefox, Edge, and Chrome browsers, thinking it was perhaps a browser quirk, and they all responded the same: other markdown works, but tables do not.

            Hi folks,
            Kieran here from the Editor team. I'm going to close this issue now.
            Pasting of both plain text tables and rich text tables are possible if you are using markdown (not markup syntax).
            Examples can be found online by searching for 'markdown tables'
            We recently shipped a paste options toolbar that can strip out the rich text and transform what you are pasting as markdown syntax.

            Hi all, Ethan here from Atlassian. I'm here to inform you that rendering tables from plain text input can be achieved when copying and pasting into Jira issue comments and description fields. There are some caveats to the autoformatting logic, which require you to copy from a plain text source. See the attached video to see an example of this in action. plain text markdown table autoformatting.mov

            If you have any further questions or feedback regarding this experience, feel free to reach out to my team and I via the below channels:

            The inability to paste tables into comments or descriptions is a big inefficiency for anybody who needs to copy in tabular data which was created elsewhere (excel, CSV, etc). JRACLOUD-70224 looks awfully similar, but limited to tables originating from Excel.

            +1 on this issue. I consider the inability to import a plaintext table (using either the old Wiki syntax or GFM) into a Jira issue editor to be a severe regression. Please fix this.
