Hi everyone,
Thanks for all of your feedback. While the Jira team does not plan to add custom fields on Jira components, I wanted to let you know that this functionality is available today in Compass for company managed projects. Compass is an internal development platform intended to help you manage your software architecture components in the way that many of you describe in your comments here.
Compass has a robust component catalog, and the list of components can be used against issues just like in Jira. Compass components are global rather than project based, so you'll have one big catalog to use for any of the projects you opt into this feature.
Compass has built in fields - description, documentation links (including Confluence), Jira projects, chat channels, owner team - as well as custom fields of many types that admins can set up. Getting started with Compass is easy, you can either import repositories through Bitbucket, Github and the like, import a CSV, or create manually. (We have python scripts available for exporting Jira components to CSV in the correct format as well here: https://github.com/atlassian-labs/compass-examples/tree/main/snippets/scripts/jira-components-to-csv.)
Compass has a free plan, like all our other Atlassian products, and you can sign up through this page: https://www.atlassian.com/software/compass/pricing.
While we don't support team managed projects yet, I hope to add this in the future. I also hope that some of you will try out Compass' custom fields on components and let us know what you think. Thanks again for staying engaged with this feature request.

Business Case: We support 65+ small web applications, and in order to know which issue is for what application, we are using components. The thought of creating 65+ JIRA projects (and growing) didn't work, and labels did not work either so we decided to use components. This has proven to be very effective. However, now we would like to know more information about the component, but we are limited to the out-of-the-box fields.
Ask: We would like to have the ability to add custom fields to the component. Examples would be URL links, General Text fields, Dates, Email, just to name a few. When looking at the schema, there is no relationship between the Component Table and the Custom Field Table. Could that be added? OR could you add more fields, such as what was state earlier directly to the table.
Thank you very much,
Karen (GRAINGER)
