JQL does not validate string with dot "." properly. For example, username with a dot e.g. test.user. JQL will show it as an invalid query. This is known to affect versions name as well.
The string need to be enclosed with quotes before it will be a valid string.
Expected Results
The string will either get enclosed by quotes automatically or it is validated as a valid string without quotes.
