Hey everyone,
We're pleased to announce that we've shipped the ability to release old project keys for re-use.
Read more about it and leave us feedback here.
Regards,
Carol and the team at Atlassian
In JIRA Cloud, it is possible to rename a project key (under Project settings > Details). However, it is not possible to use a used project key.
Current Behavior:
- Let's say user has renamed a project key from "ABC" to "KLM"
- Although there is no project uses the project key ABC, user is not allowed to re-use "ABC" for the new project key.
Suggested behavior:
- Ideally, user should be able to re-use the project key "ABC" for other/new project
Fix
A feature has been rolled out to mitigate this situation which allows you to unlink previously used project keys from a Jira project.
In short:
1) Access your Project
2) Settings > Details
3) Locate the "Previous project keys" field
4) Remove the project key(s) you want to unlink from the project
5) Hit the "Save" button for the changes to take effect
