      Atlassian Update – 02-11-2018

      Hi everyone,

We have recently reviewed this issue and the overall interest in the problem. As the issue hasn't collect votes, watchers, comments, or support cases from many customers during its lifetime, it's very low on our priority list, and will not be fixed in the foreseeable future. That's why we've decided to resolve it as Won't Fix.

Although we're aware the issue is still important to those of you who were involved in the conversations around it, we want to be clear in managing your expectations. The Jira team is focusing on issues that have broad impact and high value, reflected by the number of comments, votes, support cases, and customers interested. Please consult the Atlassian Bugfix Policy for more details.

We understand how disappointing this decision may be, but we hope you'll appreciate our transparent approach and communication.
Atlassian will continue to watch this issue for further updates, so please feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

      Thank you,

    Description

      Summary

A java warning pop-up "Firefox has prevented the unsafe plugin "Java" from running on .." (see attachment) while trying to login to JIRA. Pop up is coming up even tho JIRA does not need the use of JAVA applet in the login page.

      Environment

      • Firefox with Java Deployment Toolkit installed (see toolkit.png).
      • Windows only

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. You will need to ensure in your firefox, your java is installed. Can you checked your java here https://www.java.com/en/download/installed.jsp
      2. Go to your firefox setting, add-on. Go to Plugins. Ensure "Java Deployment Toolkit" is present
      3. Open Firefox (with the Java Deployment Toolkit installed);
      4. Access the JIRA dashboard.
      5. Notice there will be a red warning on the left side of the browser URL box, click on it the warning message will be displayed.

This is demonstrated in the two attached videos:

      Expected Results

      • JIRA should not cause Firefox to try to run the Java Deployment Toolkit.

      Actual Results

      • The warning pop-up "Firefox has prevented the unsafe plugin "Java" from running on .." (see attachment) is displayed.

      Notes

Firefox is not blocking Java per se, instead it is blocking the Java Development Toolkit from running. What the toolkit does in this case is simply get the version of Java installed. Consequently, there are no side effects of this not running.

Internet Explorer 11 seems to be affected also by a previously downloaded java deployment toolkit. In this case, the browser will prompt the user to let JIRA run java although it's not required for JIRA to function.

      Workaround

Please ignore the warning. The Java Deployment Toolkit plugin is known to be insecure and is unnecessary in most cases and therefore it was blocked by Firefox as per https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/blocked/p428.
