    • We collect Jira feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for JIRA Server. Using JIRA Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

      Current Scenario

When searching in the Issue Navigator and ordering by Components or Versions, the returned issues are first ordered by Project and only then alphabetically (in case of the components) or version order; which may lead to a bit of confusion.

      Suggestion

      • As per Eric's suggestion, we should make the issue navigator sort by component/version directly, and the user should manually specify, e.g.: 'order by project, version', if he wants to sort by project first.
      • This behavior should be documented to avoid further confusion - possibly with a note under these fields or a general note on the ORDER BY section of the Advanced Searching doc.

Update: The Advanced Searching page was updated to include an info box below the Order By keyword.

Updating older versions is a manual process. I've applied the change to the earlier versions of the JIRA docs (back to 5.0).

Hello mfernandes@atlassian.com – this looks good to me. I would check with cburwinkle to find out how best to update other versions of these documents (I am not sure if it is still a manual process, but she will know for sure). Thanks.

clepetit, sorry for the delayed response. I went ahead and updated Advanced Searching; however, as another person requested the same behavior Eric suggested, I believe it is now best we do both.

sgriffin@atlassian.com, as per the discussion above, could you please review my update? I added an info box under the Order By keyword. I haven't touched previous versions of the docs though, as I'm unsure if this should be a manual process.

I'm updating the description and issue type to make this an improvement request as we've now made the change to the docs.

mfernandes@atlassian.com - could you do me a favour and take a look at this one again? Either we have two things here:

            1. A request to change the docs
            2. An improvement request

Which one of these do we want to do? Do we want to do both? For number 1, you can go ahead and update the docs yourself if you like, btw

I support functionality to "order by project, component".

Seems good to me as well. I think these are the only two fields that behave this way, right?

Alternatively, what if we made it sort by component or version, and if you wanted to sort by project you would have to specify "order by project, component"?
