Problem Summary
When Atlassian customers transfer products from one organization to another (as described here: https://support.atlassian.com/organization-administration/docs/transfer-products-to-another-organization), user search data must be reindexed so that services like user picker and @mentions continue to work correctly.
Today, user search data is scoped to an organization. After a transfer, the existing index becomes stale for the new org, and a full reindex is required. As the guide notes, this reindex can take up to 12 hours.
For enterprise customers operating 24/7 (or even 24/5), this delay has a significant impact: for the duration of the reindex, they may be unable to reliably:
- Use user pickers to assign Jira issues
- Mention colleagues in Jira issues and other products that rely on user search
This creates a material disruption to ongoing business operations during and after organizational changes such as mergers, acquisitions, or internal restructuring.
Suggestion
Update user search so that when products are transferred between organisations, the system immediately refreshes the related user data instead of taking several hours.
This would greatly reduce (or remove) the period where user pickers and @mentions don’t work properly, helping Enterprise customers continue assigning work and collaborating without interruption during org transfers.
