NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Cloud. Using Confluence Server? See the corresponding suggestion.

      Use case:
User management with two different directories, one housing the "company users" one housing the "external employee" users.

In cases, where the status for the employment changes (i.e. user now works for company or former emlpoyee now works as freelancer) it would be nice to tell Confluence, that a given user is moved between directories.
Thus, Confluence keeps the internal stored permissions, but gets the user information and credentials from the new directory.

[ID-8983] Make it possible to move users between directories

It would be amazing to have the capability to move a single user or a bulk of user from a directory to another.

Right now I have to inactive users and create them again, and it is quite bad.

Just to inform you folks that I replied a customer on our Answers community with and workaround o migrate users from one directory to other:

            https://answers.atlassian.com/questions/298928/migrate-users-to-new-user-directory-confluence-5-4-4

"This is an invasive method which will involve executing update queries against Confluence database", so for anyone who want to try this method the following will be required:

            • Setting up a Confluence Test Instance for validation.
            • DBA Knowledge.
            • Backup of your Confluence database and application directories before attempting this.
            • Have Confluence on version 5.3

This method is not supported so if you decide doing this you will be doing it at your own risk.

            Thanks and Regards,

            Our case is the following:
We use the internal Confluence Directory with several Delegated Authentication Directories. For our company there are 2 redundant directories per domain and there are 4 domains (EU, LA, NA, AP), so this sums up to 8 Delegated Authentication Directories. Now we are trying to migrate to fewer directories, but as the users and their permissions are linked to the directory, we don't have an easy migration path for the users. We would have to change the user directory of each user in cwd_user and change the directory for every permission as well.

Mine is the case that Denise is referring to.

We originally set up the system as "Internal with LDAP Authentication", but forgot to enable SSL at the time. Now all our accounts are attached to that user directory, and the only way to resolve this appears to be to re-create the accounts under a new directory, which is obviously quite a hassle.

If I could re-assign the existing users to the new directory which is identical to every way other than the LDAP port and protocol, I would be done in no time at all. Now I need to schedule some offline time for the users whilst I go through the process of re-creating all the accounts.

Some other use cases for this:

            • Internal with LDAP Authentication directories. Eg I just had a customer who SSL and had to recreate the directory, so now has to recreate all their users.
            • Multiple internal directories

matt@atlassian.com do you have any thoughts on this?
