Issue Summary
There's no option to disable redirection to Gravatar domain even when the users are not using Gravatars.
Steps to Reproduce
- Presence of users without any avatars uploaded
- If you open, say, the Admin Hub (https://admin.atlassian.com) in your browser and navigate to Directory >> Users you will see that for the users without avatars there will be a redirect to the Gravatar domain (secure.gravatar.com) even if Gravatars are not in use.
Expected Results
There should be an option to disable the navigation to Gravatar domain when Gravatars are not in use.
Actual Results
Atlassian Account (AA) will pull avatars from Gravatar in certain scenarios. Order of avatar resolution is as follows:
- If user has not uploaded any avatar then redirect to Gravatar default image.
- If user has uploaded an avatar to their Atlassian Account, display uploaded avatar.
- Otherwise, check if user has a Gravatar under the same email address. If so, display Gravatar.
Workaround
The workaround is to upload a profile picture/avatar for the affected users. This is cumbersome for orgs with a large user base because there's no way to bulk update profile pictures:

d8c2060e6a35 I reiterate Prashant's comments.
When we opt-out from Gravatar (our current setting is "Allow Gravatar: OFF", it is expected that no redirection to Gravatar happens anymore. Still, we still get connections from the user browser to Gravatar when we access our Atlassian Jira/Confluence instances. Therefore, I don't see how this can be a feature request, since the feature already exists but is not working. To me, that is a clear scenario of a bug.
