Issue Summary

There's no option to disable redirection to Gravatar domain even when the users are not using Gravatars.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Presence of users without any avatars uploaded
      2. If you open, say, the Admin Hub (https://admin.atlassian.com) in your browser and navigate to Directory >> Users you will see that for the users without avatars there will be a redirect to the Gravatar domain (secure.gravatar.com) even if Gravatars are not in use.

      Expected Results

There should be an option to disable the navigation to Gravatar domain when Gravatars are not in use.

      Actual Results

Atlassian Account (AA) will pull avatars from Gravatar in certain scenarios. Order of avatar resolution is as follows:

      1. If user has not uploaded any avatar then redirect to Gravatar default image.
      2. If user has uploaded an avatar to their Atlassian Account, display uploaded avatar.
      3. Otherwise, check if user has a Gravatar under the same email address. If so, display Gravatar.

      Workaround

The workaround is to upload a profile picture/avatar for the affected users. This is cumbersome for orgs with a large user base because there's no way to bulk update profile pictures:

            d8c2060e6a35 I reiterate Prashant's comments.

When we opt-out from Gravatar (our current setting is "Allow Gravatar: OFF", it is expected that no redirection to Gravatar happens anymore. Still, we still get connections from the user browser to Gravatar when we access our Atlassian Jira/Confluence instances. Therefore, I don't see how this can be a feature request, since the feature already exists but is not working. To me, that is a clear scenario of a bug.

            Hi d8c2060e6a35

Thank you for your response. However, I must disagree with the characterization of this issue as a feature request. The behavior of redirecting to Gravatar after opting out of its use contradicts the purpose of the opt-out option, which I consider a fundamental issue, not a feature enhancement.

While I understand that removing Gravatar previously impacted organizations, this particular case pertains to respecting the user's decision to opt out, ensuring the system adheres to the expected behavior. Providing toggles in the UI would certainly offer flexibility, but the immediate concern is addressing the redirection issue that arises even when opting out.

We request that this be re-evaluated as a bug fix, as it directly affects user experience and trust in the system's functionality. I would appreciate further discussion with the product management team to explore feasible solutions that align with user expectations without adversely affecting organizations.

We kindly request this Jira ticket to be reopened and was closed without any consent from us.

52313fb862ac fb7457aa0c37  we tried to remove gravatar before but it affected too orgs so we are not doing that.

This redirection to Gravatar should be disabled when you opt-out from using Gravatars.

This is more of a feature request, and there should be some toggles in the UI to disable it for an organization. Today we dont support that. This will be a question for the PM on AdminHub, so i will reject this for now

Reassigning this to the profile team which I believe handles avatars

            • This redirection to Gravatar should be disabled when you opt-out from using Gravatars. There should not be a need for an option to specifically disable redirection to Gravatar, if that opt-out is selected at first place. I see this as a bug fix rather than a new feature request.
