Description:
Problem / Use Case
As an IT asset manager, I manage physical hardware assets (e.g., servers, network equipment, etc.) in Jira Assets. For each device, I need to document front and back views with photos so that colleagues can quickly identify the correct device — for example during inventory, support cases, or when locating equipment in a rack.
Currently, there is no way to display images inline within the object attribute section. The available workarounds are insufficient:
- Avatar: Only supports a single image — not enough for front + back views
- Attachments tab: Images are hidden behind a separate tab and not visible when opening the object
- URL attribute: Only renders a clickable text link — does not display the image itself
Proposed Solution
Introduce a new attribute type "Image" (or extend the existing URL attribute) that:
- Displays an inline image preview / thumbnail directly in the object's attribute list
- Supports multiple image attributes per object (e.g., "Front View", "Back View", "Label", "Serial Number Photo")
- Allows uploading images directly or referencing existing attachments
- Optionally supports click-to-enlarge (lightbox) for full-resolution viewing
Expected Behavior
When opening an asset object, image attributes should render as visible thumbnails alongside other attributes — without requiring navigation to the Attachments tab or clicking a URL link.
Business Value
- Faster identification of physical assets during support, audits, and inventory
- Reduced errors when multiple similar devices exist (e.g., same model, different serial numbers)
- Better documentation for compliance and insurance purposes
- Improved user experience for non-technical staff who rely on visual identification
