"Username is typing..." notification should be less intrusive

In a 1-to-1 conversation, when someone is typing intermittently, it's very distracting the way the "Username is typing..." text is inserted below the conversation, and then removed again whenever they stop typing for a while, which causes the entire conversation log to bounce up and down. Could this please be made less intrusive somehow? Perhaps by leaving the inserted row and changing the text to "Username has stopped typing..." or similar if they pause during their composition? Or by displaying it as a pop-up that doesn't cause other elements on the screen to be moved around?
