In irssi and some other chat clients, I find it particularly useful to be able to cycle through the chats that have new updates. This is more efficient than jumping directly to them by name, or navigating sequentially, or using the mouse.

The "next" active chat is pretty vague; it could be ordered by position in the chats list, or by the update timestamp, or whatever. Any heuristic would be a big improvement in my opinion.
