The mail template is currently limited to 256 characters.

This is entirely too small. I just added a couple of lines to the example one and I ran over the limit.

At very minimum, this field should be able to hold 4000 characters to allow for a more detailed explanation.

Space shouldn't be a problem, since there's only one of them per crowd instance.
