Tangosol coherence registers two JDK shutdown hooks: one to shut down clustered services and another one to shut down local services. As of Coherence 3.3 there is a configuration option to disable the clustered services shutdown hook but not the local services hook. COH-556 is a Coherence improvement request to allow the disabling of the other shut down hook. Tangosol have stated it is due to be implemented in Coherence 3.4
