It's possible for Confluence to crash if it runs out of memory. Memory can get low due to a leak in a plugin, or due to an automatic backup of a very large database, for example. If Confluence can detect a low memory situation, that would allow an administrator to take appropriate action before a crash occurs. It would also alert the administrator to the fact that there may be another problem which is causing this situation to occur.
