Combining the standalone installation guide into one page has benefits for maintainability, but it's pretty tricky when you need to add instructions which are specific to a particular OS.
Specifically, I'd like to see the following changes for the Mac:
- screenshot of installation: extracting the ZIP and copying it to a sensible location
- instructions for how to run startup.sh after opening a Terminal window, rather than double-clicking on it
- Mac-specific instructions for setting the home directory in confluence-init.properties
- links to Mac-related guides, like making Confluence start up automatically on the server or setting JAVA_HOME in your profile.
At the moment, we have various sentences like "If you're running Windows do X", and "If you're on a Mac do Y". These could be eliminated, and all the documents would be much shorter.
The stages breakdown we apply to Windows also isn't appropriate to the Mac. For example, we skip the first stage on a Mac. I think some of the initial steps are easier and can be merged together, whereas the final stage of starting the application from a Terminal is actually the most complex step.
