Issue Summary

When saving changes to a file in Office 365 you'll receive an error:

UPLOAD FAILED Your file wasn't uploaded because your chagnes can't be merged with changes made by someone else.

      Environment

      Office 365

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. On a machine with Office 365 open a document from Confluence via "Edit in Office"
      2. Make changes to the file
      3. Save the file

      Expected Results

The file is saved and uploaded to Confluence. A new version of the file is available

      Actual Results

You'll run into the error in Office:

UPLOAD FAILED Your file wasn't uploaded because your chagnes can't be merged with changes made by someone else.

There are no errors in the Confluence logs

      Workaround

To workaround this bug you have two options:

      1. Select Save a Copy
        1. Save a copy to the location designated
        2. The file will be properly uploaded to Confluence with a new version
      2. Select Discard Changes
        1. Any changes you've just made will be removed
        2. Make the desired changes again
        3. Save the file
        4. This time the file will be properly uploaded with a new version
        5. Note, the Office document will not close automatically after the upload in this scenario

We're also affected by this issue and since Atlassian doesn't care much about giving feedback (let alone solving the issue), we've looked into it and have found that (in our setup) it is related to Protected View: files from Confluence are not trusted by Office and users have to press "Enable editing" to edit them, which triggers a file reload in Office that seems to be the culprit.

We could fix the problem by adding Confluence to the trusted locations:

            1. Open Office Preferences > Trusted Center
            2. Press "Trust Center Settings..."
            3. Select Trusted Locations
            4. Make sure  "Allow Trusted Locations on my network (not recommended)" is enabled
            5. Add a new location, type the Confluence URL and select "Subfolders of this location are also trusted"
            6. Confirm by pressing OK

The workaround which worked for me is I used save icon instead of ctrl+s to save the docs and files.

            Strange but worked for me!!!!!

            Hope this information helps:

We got Edit in office bug during Confluence upgrade 6.13.5

In order to resolve we requested users to install companion App in their PC.

To fix this permanently we upgraded the confluence version from 6.13.5 to 6.15.9 and enabled dark feature which fixed the issue.

From confluence 7.3, this feature came inbuilt with confluence and it is should be enabled. But some days back again it throwing the same error. So tried the workaround mentioned above and its working.

Is Atlassian interested in fixing this?   This is happening for all spreadsheets I've stored in Confluence now.  I now have to migrate to another platform for this type of document management.  If you aren't going to fix it please let us know so we can explore alternatives.

Hello - Where are you with fixing this problem?  I have built several business processes using Confluence, Cenote Lockpoint, and the Excel macro to allow users to manage high traffic spreadsheets.  Trying to pull them away from Sharepoint.  A fix for this is sorely needed

            Hello,

This problem is displayed when you push on edit in office.  Then open word/office and displayed window with follow text "Failed to download the required data." (screenshot on russian lang.) :

and follow text "MS Excel app failed to access file...    ." (screenshot on russian lang.) :

            Hi,

I am facing the same issue,

I understood that Atlassian is not supporting "Edit-In-Office" anymore but as we are not moving to Companion app immediately , we would like to have a fix for this issue temporarily until we migrate. (Note: provided workaround leads to loss of data when user forgets to perform it)

I would like to know the below:

            1. Root cause of the actual issue,
              • Reason: If we get to know the actual root cause, we can also try checking the temporary solution from our side.
            1. Is there any chance of fixing this issue ? or Is issue issue is fixed already in any of the confluence version ?
              • As there are many users facing this issue, Atlassian might have planned to fix this issue or already fixed the issue ,but not seeing any update anywhere.

            Regards

            PraKasH

We are also having this issue? Can this be looked into?

Hi, we are badly affected by this bug. The workaround provided is not a good one, as we lose data by doing so.
