Atlassian status as of March 2019

The ... (more actions) menu includes a View Source option. Users expect this to provide an editable view of the storage format of a page, but instead it provides a view of the page, as it would appear in the editor.

We had planned to remove this screen in Confluence 7.0, but we've heard your feedback, and will not make any changes at this time.

This feature is not to be confused with the Atlassian Labs Source Editor plugin, which does allow you to edit the storage format of a page.

Feel free to comment on this issue if this change will have a significant impact on your Confluence site.

[CONFSERVER-57613] Plans to remove the View Source option

I often use the View Source window to copy content from one page to another for the following reasons:

            1. It opens faster than the edit view.
            2. I can copy macros, which I cannot do in the regular view.
            3. Content copied from the source view pastes cleaner than copying from the regular view. For example, pasted text from the source view does not add extra span tags or change relative links to absolute links.

But I have a problem—for pages that use layouts, I cannot copy content from the source view (Chrome and Firefox). Can you fix this?

Thanks for your feedback on this issue. We've heard you, and will make no changes to the View Source option in Confluence 7.0.

I'm going to change the status on this issue to 'Not being considered'.

Totally agree with the above described behavior told by David Studer.

I do not want this feature removed either. As in previous comments, I do refer users to this option so they can see how a page is built they do not have access to edit or copy. I've never heard of anyone expecting this option to provide an editable view. If this option is removed then there need to be some feature added so average end users can see how a page is constructed and reproduce it themselves.

I refer my users to this option when they ask me "How did you do X on this page?" and they don't have edit access to the page. This is a great way for users who cannot edit a certain page to still be able to learn how they can do the same thing. Please keep this feature. I don't honestly think it is confusing as the title specfically says "View", not "Edit".

In a word, don't. I do use the source editor a lot to fix all kinds of low level issues, clean out junk pasted in, etc. But I use the view source option to be able to do a quick look to see if there is an issue, rather than having to edit the page, then invoke the source editor. So there may be view users of this feature, but it will be the power users.

BTW, since it says "View Source," why would anyone think they could edit the code there?
