      Summary

When selecting a set of vertical rows or cells, merging does not work in Confluence 6.7.0 or higher
This worked in previous versions of Confluence.
Merging two cells horizontally does still work.

      Environment

      • Confluence Server 6.7.0

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Create a table
      2. Select cells on top of one another
      3. Click to merge
      4. Nothing happens

      Expected Results

Above are the results from 6.4.0

      Actual Results

Above are the results in 6.7.0

      Workaround

If a numbering column is used, first remove the numbering column using the button in the toolbar, then merge the cells, then add the numbering column.

            "Cannot reproduce"?!?!

This bug still exists in the latest LTS. You can easily reproduce it by trying to select the cells with ctrl+click or shift+click - the cells WILL NOT get selected.

Workaround is to drag over cells with the mouse button clicked, without any keyboard keys pressed.

            Please fix!

I have the same issue but only in Firefox. In Chrome it worked as expected, without any workaround.

This issue is still present in our Company's internally hosted version of Confluence at 7.13.x.

Nis Korsgaard's workaround works but an easier way to get this to work for me is to do a highlighting trick.

Highlight one additional cell when making your selection... Then reduce back your desired number of cells before merging.

For instance, I wanted to merge 2 vertical cells. When I was highlighting, I always selected an additional cell (3 cells total), then dragged it back to 2 cells and then merged.

I don't know why this works but it does.

I ended up here with what i though was the same issue in version 7.4.4. It was however not very reproducible and i now found the difference being the mode of selection.

By the attached gifs you can see that the "shift + click" (thick blue borders in selection) does not work, while drag select does (blue fill in cell). I know this is not the issue in the above bug report but i think it can help others ending up here.

EDIT: i do not have permissions to attach the gifs so i hope the explanation will do : )

Bug still present and seems to affect cells being merged in a column more than cells in row.

Only work-around I've found is to manually edit the HTML and add the required rowspan="x" into the <TD> section, or colspan="x" into the <TR> section. The HTML parser seems happy with this and the cells in the table appear as required.

I have the same problem and I noticed that it matters how you select the cells.

If you select the cells by a single click and immediately dragging, it will not merge the cells.

If you select the cells by a double clicking and dragging at the second click, the selection looks different, and  the cells can be merged.

I think this bug is still out there

Create table 2 x 5 without heading, and then try to merge

            Nothing will happen

I was trying to merge two cell vertically in the latest version of Confluence. The cells had content in them and I'm not sure if it was numbering columns but it might have been. However, when I try to merge cells vertically in an empty non numbered columns, I am able to merge the cells, even with a numbering collumn.

I have no idea why it did not work before but now it does.

So, no. I cannot replicate the problem. I'm pretty sure I did not imagine it as another user experienced the same problem. But it is weird.

support1014516242, smackie@atlassian.com. I have been able to successfully merge cells vertically in a number of different scenarios. In the Actual Results above, there is an automatic numbering column used. However, in the Expected Results, no numbering column is used. Because of this I can't reliably tell from the description whether the scenarios are the same in the old and new Confluence versions. When making comparisons between Confluence versions, the same replication steps need to be used in both versions. I can confirm that merging cells with a numbering column indeed does not work. However, I don't expect that merging cells with a numbering column should work, since that column is added automatically. I can merge cells vertically even when a numbering column is used as long as I'm not merging cells from the numbering column. Therefore, I cannot reproduce an issue here. support1014516242, can you confirm whether you have a numbering column used and whether the scenario described is indeed to do with the numbering column? If not, can you please provide steps to reproduce the problem?
