Currently Confluence Server 6.5 distorts quality of avatars for Users and Spaces. Here are comparison screenshots of JIRA Server 7.4.0 and Confluence 6.5 taken on a standard definition display:

This happens on standard definition displays. This is not related to other requests for HD, Retina, or 4K image quality.
Distortion occurs regardless of user input. The same file in .png or .jpg/.jpeg format will appear the same way, with or without anti-aliasing and with or without transparent pixels. (Confluence does not accept .svg format as JIRA does.)
