Atlassian status as of September 19, 2018

I’m excited to let you know that the latest release of Crowd Data Center features the ability for you to delegate user admin management to space admins, with the ‘delegated group level admin’ feature.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Crowd Data Center, it offers one place to manage your users, groups and directories and easily integrate your identity infrastructure across all self-hosted Atlassian products

I’m leaving this suggestion open, as I appreciate that this only provides a solution to those of you who currently have, or are considering investing in Crowd. However, to set expectations, this isn’t something we’re currently planning on working on within Confluence Server.

      Atlassians,

As per my understanding, right now user management is completely done by confluence administrators.
Hence very simple task like creating user account, adding them to different user groups for any space; can be done by only by confluence administrator.

I was wondering is it possible to delegate this task to Space Administrator as those are right guys to take decision on whom they want to add to their space and if they want to users to specific user-groups. As a Confluence Administrator, I don't want to spend my time in doing these time consuming tasks for hundreds of spaces, when space admins are better suited to do that.

Any idea when such kind of feature will be available ? Please let's know.

Current options as suggested by Atlassian [Comment by David Soul on 22nd Oct]:

      1. Install the Custom Space User Management (CSUM) Plugin to allow space administrators to manage users at http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONFEXT/Custom+Space+User+Management+Plugin

At last I end up in developing this CSUM plugin (version 1.0). Version 2.0 (currently rc3 release) is much better with many requested features and better UI with very active contributions from Gary, Ren, Andy

      2. Install the Invite Plugin to allow space administrators to invite users by email from http://confluence.atlassian.com/display/CONFEXT/Invite+Plugin

      3. Use external user management such as LDAP or Active Directory and allow space administrator to grant users through there

      4. Grant site administration rights

      5. Grant site admin rights to a specific user and ask space admins to delegate their user administration tasks to this person

      thanks,
      Rajendra

[CONFSERVER-5302] User management delegation to Space Admins

            Hello Jenny & Marek

Thank you for this news but there is still a problem : we need a Crowd Data Center license to use this feature.

When will you listen to your customers ?

The improvement issue raised (CWD-5251) to request this feature to be available on Crowd Server version is ranked by votes :

            • #1 out of 65 Improvement or New Feature for Crowd created since 1st of january 2018
            • #1 out of 341 Improvement or New Feature for Crowd created since 1st of january 2015

It has 35 votes in only 1 month, where this original feature request got 107 votes in 7 (yes seven) years

Don't you think something is wrong about Atlassian's positioning with this new Data Center business target ? Specially on this feature for Crowd ?

What I understand as an Enterprise Customer is that you want to promote DataCenter license which is a subscription over Server license which is a perpetual one.
Your new target is clearly driven by money and not by your customers needs.

Is this aligned with following Atlassian's values for you?

            1. Open company, no bullshit
            2.  Build with heart& balance
            3.  Don’t #@!% the customer

            For me it is not.

            -----------------------------------------
If anyone interested for this feature to be available on Crowd Server, please vote on CWD-5251

Hi, me and my team would like having the feature of "Custom Space Plugin" as normal feature of Confluence.
It'll be very useful delegate user/group/space administration to the administrator of the space.
We are migrating our Confluence to the last version (v 6.x) and for the moment it seems that we'll be at least of this feature for compatibility reason of the plugin.
Can you please evaluate the possibility of having this feature in your next releases ?
            Best regards,
            Giuseppe Russo.

            Hi all,

I am in a special situation as confluence admin (this role not normally allowed for users in my position), meaning I can keep track of groups for my ~200 user dept, but after I'm gone.. they'll have to go the "servicedesk" route. I therefore agree totally with allowing space admins to administer groups.

With regard to AD, we are apparently in a situation where we can't make use of it, even though we have an AD system in place. Not sure why this is, but something to do with our installation, and not being able to "go back". I guess it could be too big a job to change after not using AD for so long?

In any case, I'd also like to suggest "groups within groups" - apologies in advance for not reading all comments to the letter back to 2006.. (if the suggestion has already been made). Being able to add user groups to other confluence user groups would reduce duplicate work quite substantially. As it is, I need to add any (and all) users to all separate groups to which they should belong, meaning a compromise on group structures is needed to avoid du/tri/quadruplicate etc work.

            Regards,

            Tony

We are running Confluence 5.9.14 as an intranet platform. The delegated group administration is one of the most useful features, comparable with SharePoint or other typical intranet platforms. Regarding thousands of users and hundreds of spaces / space admins it is not feasible that system administrators or a service desk will manage all groups on request. This has to be done by the space owners / space admins.
            Many thanks for the plugin.
I wonder why Atlassian doesn't implement this functionality in the core system of Confluence.

Please look at implementing this feature in the tool. Space admin is the proper place for the for delegate user admin role

Agreed that this feature would be VERY helpful in terms of user/group/space administration.

I too would like to delegate user group membership to space admins. they are currently creating huge inefficient lists of individual users as they would like to retain control and don't want to bug our help desk each time the team memberships change
