Images not working with templates

The home page of some space contains a number of attached images, which I would like to reference from a template.

I did the following, which works fine on a normal page created without a template:

!mypage^myimage.gif!

When I use this in a template, "null" is displayed instead of the image when previewing or after saving the template.

Now, when I create a page based on this template, even the Wiki markup for the image is removed, whereas in the template it is still there.
