Confluence tries to preview attachments even when preview plugin is disabled

      NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

      When you disable the Confluence Previews plugin under the System add-ons section (Confluence administration -> manage add-ons) and search for any attachment that would be previewed, after clicking over the attachment name in the search list results, you are taken to the page that contains the attachment, however the attachment is not downloaded.

      Steps to replicate:

      1) Create a test page
      2) Insert some attachment to this page (can be an image or pdf)
      3) Go to the Confluence administration -> manage add ons -> show system add ons -> Disable Confluence Preview plugin
      4) Go to the dashboard and search for the attachment name
      5) Click over the attachment name

      Expected behavior

      The download window should be presented.

      Actual behavior

      You are presented to the page itself and nothing happens. The download doesn't start.

      Workaround

      1) In order to download the attachment you must click over the ellipsis (...) and select attachments.
      2) Click over the attachment name and you will be presented the download window.

      Additional investigation

      It seems the Attachment URL in the search list is pointing to the preview functionality. EG:

      http://Confluence_Base_URL/display/~admin/attachment+preview+test?preview=%2F6881293%2F6881294%2FTEST-testpdfexportimages-291215-1436-33.pdf.

      The URL should be this one ton trigger the download. EG:

      http://Confluence_Base_URL/download/attachments/6881293/TEST-testpdfexportimages-291215-1436-33.pdf?api=v2

            The Confluence Previewer is our core feature and integrated very deeply with Confluence. Disabling it will not help turn off the previewer feature in the search result
            This feature works as designed.

            This is a HUGE problem for us. We are a large law firm and our Wiki has tens of thousands of documents, mostly PDFs and our lawyers want to work directly with documents opening in Acrobat - not your Previewer. We can turn the Previewer off, and if browsing PDFs open in Acrobat, but Search results are trying to use the Previewer. Our lawyers are very frustrated.
