NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

The User List macro (also known as UserLister macro) documented in this article does not work as expected on Confluence 5.9.x and later versions. It works perfectly fine on versions prior to Confluence 5.9 series.

      Expected Behavior

The User List macro returns a list of online users based on the preset group(s) if the "Display Online/Offline Users" parameter is flagged as "true". The list includes the user account you are logged into.

      Actual Behavior

The list does not return any users along with the message "No results were found for groups : confluence-administrators,confluence-users". In other words, all users fell under "offline" status regardless of the users' activity.

      Workaround

To enable the Display Online/Offline Users filter in the User List macro (from comments):

      1. Go to (Cog wheel) > Add-ons
      2. Select System from the drop down and search for the User Lister add-on
      3. Expand the add-on and enable the User Log In Listener module.
      4. Restart Confluence for the change to take effect.

Digging a bit deeper into this issue, I found that the User List macro actually needs a module to be enabled before it can show online users. Please refer to the information page about the User List Macro:

            1. Go to (Cog wheel) > Add-ons

            4. Restart Confluence for the change to take effect.

I found that the mentioned module was disabled in our Confluence instance. We will restart our Confluence instances in some time from now and by then will we know if this indeed solves the issue for us. It might be helpful for your situation as well.

We have tested that this feature (online status) was already broken in Confluence 4.3 and persists in 5.6. Looking forward to a fix for this issue.

This is a very useful feature to determine how many users are online prior to doing server reboots.

            Please fix asap.
