"Export to Word" results in '.doc' files which cannot be opened by iOS, Preview or Pages

      NOTE: This bug report is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding bug report.

      This is reproducible on confluence.atlassian.com - the attached Word document has been generated from there.

      Doing a head on the file results in the following:

      Message-ID: <1657636268.3573.1436525934483.JavaMail.svc_confluence_prod@node471.prod.inf.atlassian.com>
      Subject: Exported From Confluence
      MIME-Version: 1.0
      Content-Type: multipart/related;
      boundary="----=_Part_3572_816584643.1436525934481"

      ------=_Part_3572_816584643.1436525934481
      Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8
      Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable
      Content-Location: file:///C:/exported.html

      Basically what is going on is that this is a multi-part email which Microsoft Word is able to display. It is not a real binary .doc file which can be opened by other tools which can open Word documents.

      Additional Information

      If a Confluence page that contains image being exported to Word and when this Word file is attached again into the Confluence page, the image will not be able to rendered properly. Most probably due to the file not being an actual .doc file:

      Workaround

      Open the exported file with Microsoft Word and use the Save As.. option to save the file as .doc or .docx file

            3 years and no fix. Mac and GSuite user here and I have no work around.

            This is further impacted by the fact some gadgets do not display when exported in PDF.

            These are just not .doc files, that's all there is to this.

            They are mail body text,  with a "text/html" part and an "application/octet-stream" part (i.e. no part which even matches Word MIME type, which would be "application/msword").

            Hello,

            Google Docs also does not know how to interpret the .doc files exported from Confluence in this way.

            I use Confluence to author documents that then I must share with academic collaborators who do not have (and are not likely to be convinced to use) Confluence accounts. The purpose of the Word doc export is so that we (they) can use Word to track changes on the document, which I can then update in Confluence for my own tracking after revision. Since I primarily use linux, it would be really helpful to be able to use LibreOffice or Google Docs to interface with my collaborators, instead of booting to another OS or loading up a VM every time I distribute a new document.
