      Atlassian Update – 28 December 2022

      Hi everyone,

We’re excited to let you know that we've started work on this suggestion. This is on our public roadmap to be delivered in Q2 2023 calendar year.

Provide users with an improved content creation flow by allowing them to view and resolve inline comments in the editor.

      Kind regards,

      Charlie Marriott

      Confluence Data Center

At the moment the inline comments feature is only visible when viewing a page. This issue is to track customers requests for viewing it while editing.

[CONFSERVER-36956] Ability to see inline comments while editing

@Jen this feature has been in Confluence cloud since 2020 as per https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-articles/Inline-comments-while-editing-FINALLY/ba-p/1444781. It does however only work when using the new editor, not the old one.

why was this only applied to the data center? this item is not closed until this functionality has been applied to all Confluence users, including Cloud. this is a terrible user experience when trying to review and edit documentation with peers.

A fix for this issue is available in Confluence Server and Data Center 8.3.0.

Thanks for putting this on the roadmap. It's frustrating to have to switch back and forth between edit and view modes to see other user's comments and then address them between different states.

Just another example of Atlassian saying FU to the customer base that made them who they are today.

It is baffling to me that anyone would consider the current operation to be working properly. The reason for adding comments to a document is so someone can later fix those comments, yet I, as the editor, need a separate copy of my document to find the comments I am trying to fix. Nice to see third parties generate plugins/profit from confluence bugs.

            Hi there,

I suppose that feature won't be released in DC, unfortunately...

Here's the app: Talk - Advanced Inline Comments[ http://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/978531/talk-advanced-inline-comments?hosting=datacenter&tab=overview that can help you with that.|http://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/978531/talk-advanced-inline-comments?hosting=datacenter&tab=overview]

It also provides a lot of features that native inline comments lack. F.e., the Suggestion feature to propose text corrections on a page, Talk Report feature that allows overviewing comments on a page/space, and other features that significantly improve your experience with inline comments.

Why should we have to rely on an add-in for functionality that should be built into the base product? Atlassian has "fixed" this problem in their cloud product. Now, please fix it in the DC version.

@Nick Vitovitch: This will not be solved in DC, but there are great Apps to solve this issue and which give you much more functionality. For example:

Really? I'm looking at a doc with two comments in CLOUD and don't see them in edit mode. Do I have to hit some key/click something to view them? Not having this feature was inconvenient with reviewing this doc during a Google meet. Thanks.

This feature would be great to have in Confluence data center because now for comments to be useful you need to have one page opened twice with one in edit and the other in read which doesn't always play nice.

@mappleton (Makisa) - I see from the linked thread that this is now being rolled out for Confluence Cloud. I really can't think of a technical reason why the choice of hosting should affect this feature.  Can you update us on the status re Confluence Server?

Collaborating while editing a work in progress document is crucial.

            1. I want to see comments made by myself and others while I'm editing so I can account for them in the changes I'm making
            2. I want to add a comment while I'm building a doc to tag people in to answer questions/take follow-up actions (I don't want to embed the comment in the doc itself; this gets messy in the common case where I'm asking for a reply)

Thanks for the consideration on this one. And keep the improvements coming, it's been an impressive couple months for both Confluence & Jira!

The whole idea of comments is to have a discussion which many times goes into changes in the document itself.
But when editing you don't see the comments.

Also if used as suggestions for edit - it is useless.

I appreciate your interest in the plugin, it seems you should definitely test it. Many big customers appreciate this solution and have been really excited since it was introduced in 2017!

To your question, this is exactly what the plugin can do  You can add NEW inline comments in the edit view. Just have a look at quick demo: https://gifyu.com/image/dADT

So using this app you can:

            Edit already existing inline comments
            Reply to inline comments
            Resolve and Delete inline comments

We would be happy to make an appointment together, when would that be possible?

            Hi Makisa,

The scenarios we have are the following:

            1. Adding an inline comment whilst editing a page: Whilst editing a page, the user may want to make a note to refer to later, ask a question on something, or provide additional information but that they don't want to actually put in the page. In this case, the user either needs to save the page to be able to add the in.-line comment or record the elsewhere so that it can be added once the page is in read-mode. Neither options are efficient.
            2. Viewing inline comments while editing a page - a previewer may add questions or comments to a page that will require updates. As per all previous comments, the page needs to be opened in 2 screens - one in edit mode and one in read mode to be able to update the page as per the comments
            3. Sometimes, it can be difficult to find inline comments when they are are in a section that is collapsed by default. This means that all collapsed sections need to be expanded to check for inline comments. Again - not very efficient - it would be nice to have some kind of indicator when a section has an inline comment.

Not really sure what you mean by this statement

"One of the challenges is considering all of the scenarios for keeping comments updated due to our publishing flow and ability for real-time collaboration. We don't have this on our roadmap yet but are considering this in our future editor plans. "

            Can you explain further?

To keep this simple, the k15t product ticks nearly all of the boxes however, it doesn't cover responding to comments in the editor. You can only resolve not add further commentary. You also can't highlight text and add comments in the editor.

In other words, if you do it using the comments function on the front end you should be able to do it on the back end (edit mode).

            Have you tried this plugin?

Thanks for your comments, votes and watches on this suggestion. We know that this is a popular ask and I too, need to have two browser tabs open to read, respond and resolve comments. It’s high on my wishlist!

We are currently exploring updates to our editor. One of the challenges is considering all of the scenarios for keeping comments updated due to our publishing flow and ability for real-time collaboration. We don't have this on our roadmap yet but are considering this in our future editor plans. In the meantime, I’d appreciate your thoughts on the most common scenarios where a feature of this type would be most helpful (such as, while in edit, just being able to read comments, having the ability to resolve them or know when someone has added a new comment).

            Thanks

It would be nice to hear feedback from Atlassian's side if the decision to delay this feature has to do with cannibalizing the above partner's product offer. You should also evaluate the opportunity cost associated with existing customers churning, who do not want to pay for an additional add on - when there are moderately low switching costs from moving to your primary competitors who have this feature out of the box.

Our team being one of them.

Agreed with John C: @Atlassian, G-Suite / Google Docs is leaving you in the dust for workflow.

Not being able to view comments while editing.... is just absurd.

Calling it expected behavior is a pretty cheap deflection – expected by whom? Not one single person I know when they realize this say "Of course! Perfect: they nailed it."

Take a look at the Google Workflow: no distinction between "editing" and non editing, and comments can be made/viewed/assigned/updated/etc. This is where confluence should be.

Even even this distinction between editing and non-editing mode is  dated and unnecessary – once you have documents which can be live edited by multiple people at once (which you do finally have now, and this is excellent) – what's the point of separate edit / view mode.

I understand that from the point of view of the Atlassian team not being able to view comments in edit mode is the ["expected behavior"|https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Confluence-questions/Is-it-possible-to-see-inline-comments-when-editing-a-page/qaq-p/764964], but from a user perspective our team was completely confused by this choice. It's so silly. Like others have mentioned we need side-by-side windows open with one in edit mode and another viewing the published page. Why would that ever be considered a good workflow for document editing and content reconciliation. It's the small things like this (and broken anchors, and a number of other small problems) that make many on our team hesitant to use Confluence over Google Docs.

Note that we're using the Cloud version, not Server

Also note that even in the comment interface, adhering to the instructed format for a link does not produce hyperlinked text.

comments not visible in edit mode. so i have to modify my workflow to this:

            1. comment received on work
            2. put suggested updated content as a reply to the original comment

            3. once verified , change the original content

            4. comment is gone

            i would rather :

            1. view all comments in edit mode
            2. make changes directly to the original content without making any changes to the comment

            3. include a comment for the person who left the comment to view the modified content
            4. include another comment if necessary
            5. writer/ editor repeats steps 1-4.

Paul, Jeremy, not sure you are aware, but there is a plug-in from k15t - Inline Comments in Editor that does exactly what you need. We are using it and it's great!

This is so important to us. We are currently opening two browser windows, side-by-side, to see comments in one window and edit the document on the right. It's kind of ridiculous that fixing this bug is even up for debate.

Same here, we would love to transfer much of our collaborative documentation into Confluence, but without access to live comments in edit mode it just can't work.

This feature gap certainly puts a dent in my ability to expediently make suggested changes to a document based on someone's comments. This is one of those things that drains a user's productivity.

I agree with all the other comments. It's very jarring coming from using Microsoft Word where I can make edits around commented areas of text to Confluence, where I need to have the published version and edit page on screen side-by-side.

This is almost a deal-breaker for me and is the reason we are still using Google Docs for some technical docs and qa purposes. It's too cumbersome to constantly close/publish so that you can read or add a comment, then go back into Edit mode (which takes a long time to load the doc, and also losses your current place in the doc.

Without being able to read/write comments in edit mode I find it highly frustrating to use Confluence except for those cases where I'm the only contributor.

Confluence is getting much better with the full screen but I truly feel Comments in Edit Mode would be a real game changer for us in fully adopting the tool.

Hi everyone, can confirm the K15t product works as you would expect the Atlassian system to work. https://marketplace.atlassian.com/apps/1220375/inline-comments-in-the-editor?hosting=server&tab=support the functions missing are the ability to reply to inline comments and to add new comments or delete. You can only view and resolve but this is a good start.

This does appear to be a major oversight for a collaboration tool. Very cumbersome to not be able to see inline comments in edit mode and have to have two windows open. Likewise, the lack of ability to output the inline comments with the page when exporting is an oversight too.

Oh wow Jan-Peter Rusch, this is what the system has been screaming out for and it is reasonably priced. I haven't installed this yet but it looks the business and knowing K15t it will work well, great find! I'll update the thread once tested. Domenico, thank you as well, I have been testing an older version of this and it works ok but bit lacking in function though I haven't tested the most recent version.

And so the saga continues. Basically if your requests end up on one of these discussion boards it doesn't seem to make any difference how many comments or votes they get it is either dismissed or earmarked as a Future Consideration, either way it is dead and you'll need to find a solution by yourself be it a plugin or manual workaround such as your own css or similar. In this case if they were going to fix this they would have done it by now. Sorry to be negative but I've been using the system for a while now and everything I've wanted to see a fix for has ended up in the same result either, "there's a plugin you'll have to shell out for" or "it is not currently possible, here is a board to make you feel better and give you the impression we are listening".

@Jan-Peter Rusch - this is a massive paint point for software firms who use Confluence for public documentation.  Opening a second browser to track all the comments in a highly collaborative environment where engineers, product managers, tech writers, and support staff are all providing feedback causes inefficiency, inaccuracy and flat out omissions.  My previous comment included very detailed info about our pain points around this, which ultimately affect our customers.
