The new sidebar consumes a considerable amount of screen real-estate in a very key visual location, and contains features that most of our users simply won't ever require.

In our current 5.1.4 test deployment, our landing wiki page has the following elements in a standard user's sidebar:

      • A large logo + header text
      • "Space tools"
      • "Page map" (there are no subpages on the landing page, so this is empty)

This leads to visually wasted space and user confusion; the intended content is on our wiki page, not the sidebar.

The space admin is worse off, with a whole paragraph of text in what is ostensibly a navigation bar:

Here you can add shortcut links to the most important content for your team or project. Configure sidebar.

At the very least, an option to have the sidebar collapsed by default would be preferable to the current design. Users can't figure out that the sidebar is collapsable, and by the time they do, we've already wasted their visual and attention currency on information/navigation that isn't relevant to them.
