viewxls macro does not render "<" AND ">" & the data within "<" AND ">"

Steps to reproduce:

1. Attach file2.xls into Confluence page. Here is how the content looks like:
   
2. Embed it in the page using viewxls macro
3. Here is the result:
   
   viewxls macro does not render "<" AND ">" & the data within "<" AND ">"

Changing the excel file to .xlsx does not make any difference too as per my testing. However viewxls rendered the symbol when it is used this way:

hanis<
hanis>
