    Description

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

Due to a combination of historical migration bugs, Atlassian support has (for a very long time) been recommending to upgrading customers that if they are running a version of Confluence prior to 2.7.4, they upgrade to that version first before attempting to upgrade to anything more recent.

The product did not prevent upgrading directly to higher versions, but the probability of at best failure, and at worse data corruption/data loss were reasonably high.

As of Confluence 4.2, this policy is now reflected in the product: attempts to upgrade from versions prior to 2.7.4 will fail (with a message pointing the customer to the Confluence Upgrade Guide), and attempts to import data from versions prior to 2.7.4 will also explicitly fail.

The upgrade guide and backup import documentation will need to be updated to reflect this.
