Allow users to specify alt and title for images in the WYSIWYG editor

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

Note: You can still insert images with alt text and title in 4.0 using the insert wiki markup dialog

Before 4.0, users could specify alt and title on an image using wiki markup as follows:

      Title

      !fish.gif|title="I am a fish"!

      Alt

      !fish.gif|alt="I am a fish"!

There should be a way to specify these elements in the image properties panel

[CONFSERVER-23547] Allow users to specify alt and title for images in the WYSIWYG editor

I'm glad this is coming in 5.1 but wish it was sooner. This issue contributed to Confluence not being used for a project in our environment. I like Confluence but I need accessibility issues to be focused on by Atlassian or more decisions may move us to look at other solutions.

This feature will be shipped in Confluence 5.1. In the meantime, please use this wiki markup workaround to add alt and title attributes to images.

Luis - I'm afraid that there isn't an admin option to set alt text as required. I've raised CONF-28195 to reflect your request, you're welcome to watch and vote on the issue.

I would like this implemented with an administrative option to set the alt text as required for an installation. Since all uploaded images can be viewed in Confluence, these values should be set as they are uploaded. The editor could then make this entry the default value in the editor and make it available to edit if needed for that particular use of the image.

I find it hard to believe that this simple functionality was overlooked, when there are so many US federal and government clients relying on confluence to deliver content. It seems like EVERY OTHER blogging and CMS system allows users to embed alt text to images, including drupal and wordpress. We've been reporting these issues for years, but it seems like the company doesn't care about seeing-impaired people accessing content or the federal agencies who need to accomodate these users. Alt text also helps to optimize search and simply to meet simple standards of building html content. Get it together please!

I agree with Karie - this is another example of a half-arsed implementation of a feature in Conf 4.x. We sell Conf 4.x to users on the basis that it is easier to use and they will "never have to touch wiki markup again" well, unless of course they want to add a title to an image. Please fix this ASAP.

It seems that these types of issues to get us back to feature parity with the wiki markup should be considered a high priority. In essence, it seems like a bug, vs improvement, as the capabilities and functionality that was being used is no longer available. This particular feature can be a critical issue for those that utilize Confluence for customer-facing documentation, where image captions and titles are common or part of the standard documentation requirements.
