While working in the Rich Text editing mode typing out emoticon like the following:

will sometimes produce the emoticon if you switch to Preview mode. Other times it will escape the first parentheses such that the emoticon does not appear in Preview mode. This can be circumvented by using the Insert Emoticon menu item, but limits power users from just typing the emoticon.
