      Atlassian Update – 19 December 2023

      Hi everyone,

This is Jacqui from the Confluence team. Thank you for your patience with this suggestion. We've heard that the ability to bulk delete attachments is important to you and we're excited to share that you'll soon be able select and delete attachments in bulk for a page or blog post. This functionality will be released very soon. Please look out for it in the Confluence Release Notes, and continue to watch this ticket for further updates.

      Kind regards,

      Jacqueline Bietz

      Description

Is there a tool that I can use to bulk delete attachments on a page?

If there are many attachments to be removed, it can become painful to remove them one by one.

      Workaround

Retention rules were shipped as part of the Confluence Data Center 7.16 release. These allow you to set retention rules to specify how long to keep historical versions of attachments. You tell Confluence how much historical data you want to keep (by the number or age of the versions), and then a scheduled job will delete the excess, in small batches, so as not to impact your site's performance. While this doesn't specifically help to manually bulk delete attachments, it does help you automate the removal of attachments that are no longer utilised in your instance.

You can learn more about using retention rules to delete unwanted data by reading our documentation. You can also learn about identifying particularly large attachments in a space by following the guidance in this documentation.

Please upgrade to the Confluence Data Center 7.16+ to access retention rules.

            Hi 01caadf04a91,

thanks for your question! In order to preserve the high quality standards and stability that underpin our LTS releases, we generally don’t backport features and we’re not planning to backport the ability to delete attachments in bulk to Confluence 8.5. This feature will however be included in this year's LTS version as you say .

            Kind regards,

Is there any chance to have this option integrated in to LTS version 8.5.x? Or shall we wait for new LTS release?

            Thank you.

Thanks Jacqui for the update "we're excited to share that you'll soon be able select and delete attachments in bulk for a page or blog post.". It's long awaited. I hope also some good ideas that have been posted in this issue to "bulk" delete attachments will be considered as well.

Sorry but pointing to retention rules have really nothing to do with the requested bulk deletion functionality.

It often happens that you have old screenshot data in the attachment list of a page that you need to get rid of t some time because you otherwise would end up with hundreds of no longer used screenshots.

So we are really looking for a bulk delete OOTB functionality. So please do not point to any App that would cost us addl. money. As bulk delete really should be a OOTB functionality for Confluence.

It's good to have retention rules now but it's no solutions for "bulk delete attachments". In most of the cases it's not even a workaround.

            Dear Confluence development team,

I have an idea / suggestion for the Confluence System (Data Center Edition).
We have many pages that contain many attachments.
It would be very helpful if there was a way to be able to select multiple attachments and delete them at once.
For example by adding selection boxes in front of the attachment.

            Many thanks and best regards.

I have a page where I brought over the attachments in a copy and I want to keep half of them or so. I'd like to be able to delete based on a search/filter. ScriptRunner does have a builtin script for deleting attachments older than a date, but nothing builtin for a filter type delete.

The workaround for the problem is to write a groovy macro that removes attachments according to a given criterion. For example, "Creation date older than". I use such a workaround for pages automatically fed with attachments every day. The macro removes redundant attachments when the page is opened.
