Our team has added functionality to convert pages to blog posts and vice versa to our app Space Admin for Confluence . This is another very reasonable feature request that is killed as won't fix and then people provide paid apps that provide some or all the functionality. That is a horrible user experience for users.  So the only way to convert a page to a blog and a blog to a page is to edit one select all then past into a new doc and then reformat and save, then delete the old one. GOOD JOB Atlassian!!! Just more crap piled in on the pile of garbage applications you guys make and don't really support. You constantly blame users for doing things wrong instead of fixing bugs, you refuse to implement popular common-sense feature requests. Forcing people to create apps which then they charge for or no one creates. Companies pay enough for this garbage they should get some real support and features. This has been going on for at least 8 years and shows no sign of changing. Whenever going for a new job I cringe when they say they use Atlassian products!

KC Integrations added a comment - 27/Apr/2017 11:21 PM Thanks  erinb  for the review.   mbells , if you just want to convert your current pages, install a Trial License for 30 days, do the conversion using the Tools menu options and uninstall it.  This will help get your site cleaned up. The main benefit of the plugin is the Page to Blog template macro which would be used for ongoing installations. Hope this helps

We think it is very helpful to users to maintain appropriate distinction the two media streams (blogs and forum topics). Here's how we describe the two: If you want the information to last, and possibly evolve over time, and encourage responses and discussion, then you likely want to create a page (discussion forum topic) . Use the New Topic  button on every forum summary page or the corresponding button on the wiki Dashboard. If the information is specific mainly to the current time-frame, and isn't going to change over time, and is more an announcement than request for response then you'll most likely want to create it as a blog post . Use  New Blog Post button on the wiki Dashboard. These aren't hard-and-fast rules; they're just pointers to give you a place to start. I regularly ask users to move content from a discussion forum page to the blog. Users are always responsive. Many are also aware of the downside of three alerting email messages going to watchers for the original topic post, the new blog post, and deletion of the original topic post. The hassle to the original user, the helpful admin, and at least one alerting message would be eliminated if there were a move function. Alas, the database design of Confluence seems to make the barrier to making available a "simple" content move function too high for Atlassian. You might think that Atlassian's consideration could evolve as Confluence has, but apparently not on this point. It's a shame.

This new handling leads to errors, when our users want to create a blog post by opening the blog first and then click "Create" expecting to create a new blog post. Instead they create a new page. They then create the page & save it, call support & ask "Where is my blog post?"... Therefore either make it default to create a blog post when already viewing a blog / blog post or create a method to change a page into a blog post.

It was clear that our users were going to create content of the wrong sort in the wrong place. We have been holding off upgrading from Confluence 4 until we can redesign Confluence without that "Create" button, most likely with Adaptavist ThemeBuilder. To us this is another case of Atlassian developers not actually using their application the way their customers' users do.

We routinely have people create pages that are supposed to be blog posts because of this (and yes we all know that it doesn't work that way, but it's so unintuitive that even the most attentive users make this mistake regularly). Overall very frustrating for something that should be so simple.

We are using your Macro to keep existing forums in a very simple form, where comments are the Forum Entries. That's why it would be helpful if the authors' ids were kept during this conversion. In addition your Macro works great and many Thanks to You for adding the conversion of existing pages.

I don't have the need to use it for new pages, just existing ones, since my problem is converting pages to blog posts because we have folks that no matter how many times you tell them they forgot to create a blog post and create a root level page instead.

So the solution I am after is something that is ongoing and any user can convert/create Blog post from templated pages. So having to restart after every new Blog is not going to work for me in this case. Anyone else had any success without restarting Conf? Is there a way to get Confluence to reload the database live?

Tom Wolff (Admin) added a comment - 11/Sep/2013 12:27 PM I totally agree with Martin. My users don't understand the difference between the Blog and other "normal" pages. We use the forum macro to create discussion forums. We try to explain that a topic intended to generate discussion goes in a discussion forum, and news articles and such belong in the Blog. However, blog posts often generate more discussion than entries in discussion forums, and certainly more than in informational "normal" pages. All have titles, contents and comments and look pretty much alike. So it falls to the admin to relocate pages according to our criteria, but we can't do it. The time has passed for the structural distinction between blog and normal pages. Please find a way to make them interconvertible.

Nic Hart added a comment - 10/May/2013 7:05 PM - edited I would like to ensure that the simple 'basic' use case is not weighed down (and thus delayed in implementation) with more complex requests like merging or splitting, or changing the behaviour of blogs (or pages...). The big win (IMHO) is gained by being able to flip a blog to a page in the same space (and possibly vice versa, if that does not add any complexity). It could be done (I suggest - not having looked at code!) simply in the space admin page hierarchy view, where pages can already be moved around by drag'n'drop. Just show the blogs there too (possibly with a toggle on/off for their visibility).

Both are actually the same exact use case - someone mistakenly creates a blog post for something we have already reserved sub pages of a single page for, or someone mistakenly creates a page at the root level of the Space instead of a blog post. I find myself manually creating one or the other, copying from one to the other, then deleting the original far too often. So for me it's not a purposeful use case, it's to correct mistakes.

I think the distinction between pages and blog posts in Confluence is very misleading and really pointless. I would suggest to remove the blog posts functionality from Confluence altogether. I understand why blog posts were added to the product but to be honest we have more trouble than benefits from it.

DS Morse added a comment - 11/Apr/2012 2:33 PM For use the "Use case" is simple... Users don't pay any attention when they create content! Content that should be a blog post gets created as pages. This is extra difficult since the "word import" goes straight to a page and does not give the option to import to a blog post. So when users use the import word doc feature they mistakenly create pages. Currently an admin has to grab the wiki content and create the new post then delete the page, but this looses the author info, time stamps and edit history.

The more general request could be something like ... bring blog posts and pages closer together feature wise.

Now there is no way of converting it to a post and I cannot create a new post with the same content and move the comment, so I have to live with the page. Frustrating...

From my perspective less of a priority than the capability to move. It is still the case that it is more common that users do a post that should be a page than that they have a need for making a draft which is later published.

It might also be the case that a user makes a post in the personal space that would be more relevant in a common space and therefore should be moved. We have so far not had any problems with drafts (i.e. no real need). Of course the post made does not have to be in a personal space. We have had several examples when we have merged different spaces and would have liked to remove the old ones, but have had to keep them just because of the blog posts.¨ And of course we also have problems with blog posts that should be pages, pages that should be blog posts and comments that should be moved from one page/post to another, but those problems are already reported as separate issues.

One reason we know of is that people want to write a draft of a blog post in a restricted page (since you can't save pages/blog posts as drafts and you can't restrict blogs) and then later publish to a blog post by converting the page to a blog post. Are there more use cases than this or is this the main one?
