[search] smart search like in jira to limit scope to a space

    • We collect Confluence feedback from various sources, and we evaluate what we've collected when planning our product roadmap. To understand how this piece of feedback will be reviewed, see our Implementation of New Features Policy.

NOTE: This suggestion is for Confluence Server. Using Confluence Cloud? See the corresponding suggestion.

jira has a nice feature in the [quicke search] box on the top right that is called "smart search":
when entering the key of the project as the first word the search is scoped to that project only.

i'd like to have that very much in confluence too!!

      EXTENSION
it would be nice to be able to select several spaces to limit ur search scope. eg: search in spaces A,B from A-H. but hat is a topic for the advanced search not the [quick search]

Thank you for raising this issue. While we can see how this feature would be useful, we have no plans to implement it in the foreseeable future. In order to set expectations, we're closing this request now.

            Thanks again for your idea.

We've since removed this space key 'encouragement'. It was affecting ranking by introducing an additional term in your query that will rarely match a high ranked field in the document and therefor giving poorer results than might be expected.

See point 1 of Agnes's blitz testing results for a good illustration of this -

I've re-opened this improvement idea after reviewing the proposed implementation.

The implementation doesn't really address the full improvement. In English, what you can now do is encourage the results to be preferred from a particular space. However you are not strictly limiting results to only that page.

Some additional side affects that mean this isn't really a full implementation -

            1. The space key is still considered a 'general' search term. e.g. the key DOC will still be searched for within pages. Matches in the DOC space will be given precedence but if there isn't any you'll still get matches for the term 'DOC' from other spaces
            2. The space key is OR combined with any other terms so documents matching the space key only but no other part of the query term will also be returned. This might not be as expected.

So in summary, the solution we have is useful to encourage the results you know are in a particular space to come to the top of the search result however it is not the complete implementation necessary to resolve this issue.

This hasn't been implemented with the sophistication of the JIRA solution.
Instead we have boosted query results in such a way that if the spaceKey you enter matches then those hits will be given a very high priority.

The end result should be very similar to JIRA except that if there are no hits in that space you will still get relevant results from another.

e.g search for "SPACEKEY monkey". Any hits for monkey in the the space called 'SPACEKEY' will be given very high priority and appear first in your results.

Any hits for SPACEKEY and monkey in pages from other spaces will also be returned but without the same priority.
