By default we ship Confluence to use a maximum of 15 database connections at any one time. This is one of the first things customers have to tweak when the reach any sort of request load on their application. We should look at raising this maximum to say 30 or 40 and consider also keeping some connections open permanently to make request processing after and idle period a little more responsive.

It would be great if we could detect periods where requests seem to be backing up due to connection pool exhaustion and print appropriate alerts somewhere at the very least.
