Current Behavior:
After the Confluence page redesign, labels were moved to the bottom-right corner as part of the page metadata panel. This introduced several usability regressions:
- Low discoverability Labels are hidden in the bottom-right corner, not visible at a glance when reading a page
- Truncated display Only a few labels are shown with a "+" indicator; users must click to see all
- Excessive clicks to add a label , Clicking "" opens the metadata panel, then requires another click on " Add label" before the user can start typing
- No label prompt on page copy - When copying/duplicating pages, labels carry over without prompting the user to review or reset them
- Label affordance unclear in edit mode - The bottom bar in edit mode advertises labels but lacks clear labeling, making it unclear to new users what they are
Expected Behavior:
- Labels should be visible alongside the page title/header area so readers can immediately understand content context
- All labels should be displayed without truncation (or with minimal, accessible overflow)
- Adding a label should require a single click → immediately allow typing (no intermediate step)
- Page copy/creation dialogue should include an option to review/reset labels
- Label UI should have clear affordance in both view and edit mode
Impact:
- Content labeling hygiene degrades over time due to friction
- Readers lose contextual signals about page relevance
- Power users who rely on labels for content taxonomy are significantly impacted
- Teams using labels for automation, reporting, or filtering face reduced adoption
