Current Problem:
Currently, users who want to edit Excel files attached to Confluence Cloud pages are often forced to use the "Atlassian Companion App," which requires a local installation and opening a desktop application. This process is fragmented, slow, and does not support seamless real-time collaboration within the browser. While integrations with Microsoft 365 or Google Drive exist, many organizations prefer to keep their data natively within Confluence attachments without relying on third-party cloud storage providers for security or compliance reasons.
Suggested Solution:
Implement a native, browser-based editor for Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) files within Confluence Cloud. This feature should:
Allow users to click an "Edit" button on an Excel attachment and open a spreadsheet editor directly in the browser tab.
Support real-time co-authoring (multiple users editing the same sheet simultaneously).
Automatically save changes back to the Confluence page as a new version of the attachment.
Provide basic Excel functionalities (formulas, cell formatting, and multiple tabs) without needing to leave the Confluence interface.
Workaround:
- Using the Atlassian Companion App to edit via desktop Excel.
- Uploading the file to OneDrive/SharePoint and using the "Office 365 for Confluence" macro.
- Manually downloading, editing, and re-uploading the file as a new version.
Acceptance Criteria:
Users can edit .xlsx files entirely within the web browser.
No local software installation (like Companion App) is required.
Changes are synchronized in real-time or saved automatically to Confluence attachments.
