Confluence Feature Request: Increase the Visual Size of Confluence Editor Toolbar Icons for Improved Accessibility

XMLWordPrintable

      Summary

Increase the visual size of Confluence editor toolbar icons to better fill the clickable area and scale proportionally with text, matching perceived size at common zoom levels.

      Actual Results

In the Confluence editor toolbar, each button's clickable area measures about 28 × 28 px, meeting minimum size requirements. However, the SVG icon glyphs inside these buttons measure only 12 × 12 px.

      As a result:

      • The icons appear much smaller than the surrounding text and clickable area.
      • Users with low vision report that the icons are hard to see at usual zoom levels and difficult to distinguish.
      • Compared to Jira, where toolbar icons fill the clickable area more fully, Confluence icons feel disproportionately small and less prominent.

Though the hit area meets technical standards, the small glyph size reduces usability for visually impaired users.

      Expected Results

Increase the SVG icon glyph size within the existing toolbar button target so icons are more prominent and easier to recognize at standard zoom levels.

Consider increasing the icon size from 12 × 12 px to about 20–24 × 24 px, where feasible, while maintaining:

      • Clear visual distinction between icons,
      • Consistent appearance across themes (light/dark) and zoom levels,
      • Compliance with contrast and target-size requirements.

      Additional Context

The goal is for toolbar icons to fill more of the clickable area, align better with text scaling, and improve usability for users with low vision, without changing the layout or interaction model. This is an accessibility-driven usability improvement, not a WCAG target-size failure, since the current hit area meets minimum size requirements.
