Allow Confluence Cloud admins to control sidebar item visibility based on user or group permissions

XMLWordPrintable

    • Our product teams collect and evaluate feedback from a number of different sources. To learn more about how we use customer feedback in the planning process, check out our new feature policy.

      Current Behavior:
In Confluence Cloud, the sidebar displays sections such as Automation, Calendars, Blog, and other app integrations to all users with access to a space, regardless of whether they have permission to use those features. If a user clicks on a section they do not have access to, they receive an error or “no access” message, but the sidebar item remains visible.

      Problem:
This approach can cause confusion for end users, clutter the interface with irrelevant options, and may expose features or integrations that are not intended for all users. It also increases support requests from users who see options they cannot use.

      Requested Improvement:
Enable Confluence Cloud administrators to control the visibility of sidebar items (such as Automation, Calendars, Blog, and other app integrations) based on user or group permissions.

      • If a user or group does not have permission to access a feature or integration, the corresponding sidebar item should be hidden from their view.
      • This control should be available at both the global and space levels, allowing for flexible configuration.

      Benefits:

      • Cleaner, more intuitive user experience—users only see features they can actually use.
      • Reduced confusion and support requests.
      • Improved security and compliance by not advertising features to unauthorized users.
      • Greater alignment with enterprise permission management best practices.

      Example Use Cases:

      • Hiding the “Automation” sidebar item from users who do not have permission to create or manage automation rules.
      • Hiding “Calendars” or “Blog” from users who do not have access to those features.
      • Restricting visibility of third-party app integrations to only authorized groups.
