Improve the "Mentioned on" linking between Jira and Confluence Cloud

      Summary

Currently, a Confluence Cloud instance is connected to a Jira Cloud instance on another site via Application links. Once this connection is established, when a Jira work item URL is pasted onto the Confluence page, a "Mentioned on" link is added automatically in the corresponding Jira work item

      Pain point

When the application link is created, it is required that each user authenticate and approve the OAuth connection before performing the linking between the sites by following the below steps:

      • Navigate to Confluence in Domain A
      • Create a new page
      • Add a Jira Legacy macro to the page
      • Under 'Choose server', change the Jira server from 'System Jira' to Domain B's Jira server
      • Click on 'Login & Approve'
      • Click on 'Approve'

This step is not clearly understood by end users and hence they may start adding Jira work item URLs on Confluence pages without completing the Oauth authentication for their user account between these instances resulting in no "Mentioned on" links created in Jira.

Also, once the Oauth connection is completed, any Jira links pasted on Confluence pages before the authentication is not automatically added to Jira. The only workaround is to manually re-paste the URL on the Jira work items on all previously linked pages, which can be tedious.

      Suggestion

Provide a better user experience when adding Jira Work Item links to Confluence pages such that:

      • It is prompted or clear to the users that the Oauth authentication needs to be completed in order to see the "Mentioned on" links
      • It is possible to automatically resync all previously pasted Jira work items in Confluence prior to the authentication so that the "Mentioned on" links are created.
      • If the Jira work item links are removed/added in Confluence pages, the corresponding "mentioned on" links should be removed/added in Jira automatically.
