      Update 5th March 2024

Hey everyone!  After investigating this ticket some more, we've concluded that embed functionality breaks when using particular share modals or context menus from OneDrive or Sharepoint. Given that we haven't supported these entry points in the past, I've moved this to a suggestion.

Please continue leaving feedback on this ticket to help us prioritise this work

      Thanks,
Venkatesh Vasudevan (Product Manager, Linking Platform)

      Issue Summary

As part of some changes, Microsoft OneDrive for Business macro is being deprecated and the links inserted on the macro will be converted to Smart Links.

However, Smart Links does not display the embed option after pasting Microsoft OneDrive/SharePoint links on the fabric editor.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Create a new page in the fabric editor
      2. Generate a SharePoint link with the share option and copy it. (don't try with direct links)
      3. Paste the link to the page.

      Expected Results

The Smart Link would show the "Display Embed" option.

      Actual Results

The Smart Link doesn't show the "Display Embed" option.

      Workaround

If you select Display inline or Display card option the first, then Display embed option will be shown in the next click.

Here you can find the demonstration of the workaround.

PS: This workaround isn't applicable for some customers.

This issue is still occurring. I had no issue on pages for about a year, and then when I checked just within the last couple weeks the Embed function is no longer visable even with the previous work-arounds.

            Hi 65c9b14381b6,

            Thanks for following up.

This issue is still reproducible. As you probably know there are multiple ways to generate a sharable link from Microsoft products, some scenarios like (copying URL or using Windows Explorer) now work, but most scenarios (like using Share/Copy option from the application menu) still result in a non-embeddable link. Below I have recorded a few different scenarios for creating links from Microsoft products, along with a comment whether the resulting links are currently embeddable. This will hopefully help you reproduce and fix these issues..

            Scenario Embeddable in Confluence
Browse to a SharePoint document library, right click a file and select Share/Copy option No
Open document in a web app and copy the URL displayed in the address bar Yes
Open document in a web app and select Share/Copy option in the app menu No
Open in desktop app and use Share/Copy option from the app menu No
With OneDrive for Business installed, browse to shared document in Windows explorer, right click file and select Share option Yes

            Regards,

            Ivan

            Hi everyone,

This is Anna from the Confluence team. Thank you for raising this bug and bringing it to our attention. After our investigation into this issue, we weren’t able to reproduce the described behavior within our instances: smart links of Microsoft OneDrive/SharePoint display embed display option.

We would like to get to the root cause of what you’re experiencing. Could you provide some more details or a screenshot to help us narrow down this case?

We will keep this issue open for another 14 days, but if we don’t hear back by then we will need to close this out to focus on our upcoming roadmap for all Confluence users.

            Best,

            Anna

We too are facing same issue in our instance. Using Share > Copy link and paste into Jira or Confluence is a very common use case and we would like this to work (allow embedding) as it does with other SharePoint links copied from the address bar. I would also like to mention that this scenario used to work fine when this functionality was part of Confluence addon, but this new solution seems to have this issue with handling HTML links, which the original solution was fine with. Please fix it.
