Issue Summary

      Situation #1:
      • Upon attempting to insert a Roadmap Macro into a page after making editing it, the changes are not saved.
      Situation #2:
      • After inserting a new lane, you won't be able to rename the lane right away. You can access the edit screen but it won't' allow you to edit it.

      Steps to Reproduce

      Situation #1:
      1. Add a Roadmap Planner macro
      2. Spend some time creating the roadmap. (30-40 minutes)
      3. Click Insert
      4. Occasionally, the changes will not appear on the preview screen. It tends to occur when you've spent a significant amount of time on the roadmap.
      Situation #2:
      1. Add a Roadmap Planner macro
      2. Add a Lane
      3. Try to rename the lane that was just added

      Expected Results

      • The changes to the roadmap should appear on the preview screen.
      • You should be able to rename the lane after adding.

      Actual Results

      Situation #1:
      • The changes do not appear in the Preview screen. This behavior is not consistent.
      Situation #2:
      • You can access the edit screen but it won't allow you to edit it.

      Workaround

      Situation #1:

The cause of this is still being investigated. At this time, there is not a known workaround.

      Situation #2:
      1. Add a Roadmap Planner macro
      2. Add a Lane
      3. Insert to Roadmap Planner macro
      4. Edit the Roadmap Planner macro
      5. Then, edit the Lane.

      Notes

In the case of changes not appearing as saved, there have been some who have noticed the issue tends to resolve on its own.

[CONFCLOUD-69248] Changes not saved when editing Roadmap Planner

Hello, same as the other commenters, I have also lost work to my newly created roadmap project.  Two questions...

            1. Is there an expected timeline for the fix?
            2. Some edits I made did indeed save (changes to x/y access on Impact/Effort page), is it worth my time to retry other lost edits in the hopes that they may take this time around? Please advise ASAP.

Editing almost never works. And I lost hours of my day because of this...

Today is my first day in Confluence (trying to test and set it up for my team) and this makes me reconsider the idea of using it:

            • firstly because it makes Confluence look like a product in alpha version with such a big problem in such a basic tool - which is strongly featured in the first generated introduction page (which by itself makes the chance of us editing it even higher).
            • secondly because it seems like it's a super old bug that still hasn't been taken care of
            • thirdly because the whole Confluence UI seems to be built in the same way and have similar issues (like the obviously badly labeled "insert" button, to confirm an edit), it all just makes Confluence feel like a problem rather than a solution.

Confluence looks like a huge and useful tool! But then if the most simple and basic tools have such usability problems and terrible bugs (that cause loss of work), I'm really scared to go deeper into it and face the "bigger issues".

            Hi seth.keel and 4a801d5d9e5b,

Thank you for the feedback that this bug’s fix didn’t resolve your issue! We'd like to better understand what is causing roadmap planner to not save your work. To help us to do that, could you open a support ticket and provide us access to your instance? We'd to get some more details to understand if what you're seeing is caused by the identical root cause behind this bug.

            Thank you!

            Best,

            Erik

Erik, yes, this issue is clearly not fixed. This just happened to my project sponsor. He spent quite a lot of time updating the timeline and lost 100% of his work. That is beyond frustrating for everyone.

If you can't fix this issue, the macro should not be available or it should have a warning so people don't naively assume this macro is production ready.

This issue is not fixed. Scenario #1 just happened to me this morning and I lost over an hour of work a month after Atlassian says this issue is fixed.

Honestly I think the problem starts with the poor UI/UX of the roadmap planner tool. I had done all this work editing (which would have taken me less time if the interface were not so feature-poor), and then I was honestly not sure what button to click to save my work. The buttons at the bottom of the editing modal window say "Insert" and "Cancel" – but the component was already inserted on the Confluence page . . . did this mean "Insert a copy" or "Save"? Was I supposed to click "Publish"? If I close the editing modal window, does it auto-save?

I'm going to have to tell my team not to use this tool if it's a pain to use in the first place and then just eats a bunch of work without warning.

            Hi Erik

Thanks for the update, and congrats on the fix for scenario 1.  Sadly this bug has been open so long that we had to move to a competitor for roadmapping software.  I'm not posting this to be an ass, I thought it might be useful info to help you prioritise critical issues like this one more effectively in future.

Don't worry, we're still loving Confluence and Jira for their core abilities, but roadmapping isn't one of them from a Product perspective in my opinion.

I also noticed that when I was scrolling horizontally in the roadmap, many times the browser showed the back shortcut, but I didn't leave the roadmap editor window. I never left the editor, but when I clicked Insert, all my changes were gone (I also landed on the previous page, not the page I was editing).  I agree that I don't understand how this is a Low priority since I'm not inclined to use Confluence anymore for roadmap planning, even though I was starting to push my team to move off of Smartsheet to use Confluence. I'm definitely rethinking that direction now.

This should NOT be low priority, Confluence is literally deleting our work from under us when this happens.  There is a third scenario that the original reporter didn't run into–it also will sometimes fully delete the entire roadmap after you finish making edits.

This has just happened to me too. Two different manifestations, so I came looking to see if a bug was already reported.

Problem #1: It doesn't always save edits after you hit insert on the editor

I edited a roadmap and it had successfully saved a few times, but I then spent a longer time time adding more in depth details, but all of the changes during that round of editing failed to be saved.

Problem #2: It sometimes fully deletes the entire existing roadmap after you try to insert edits

I then tried to edit it again, and did just a couple short edits and clicked insert, to test it out, but this time it completely deleted the entire roadmap when the editor closed, with no way to get it back.

I have to fully recreate the roadmap from scratch now, since this is a new page, so there's no history yet to retrieve it from. Frustrating to have Confluence delete my work out from under me.

Other people have been reporting this in Confluence Questions since last year also (I just posted my experience there too):
