With the editor UX changes, we are now using markdown syntax for monospace (backticks), so `monospace` instead of our old wikimarkup syntax which was {{monospace } }.
On keyboards QWERTZ (i.e., German, Austrian, Swiss, etc.), the backtick requires shift, and it prefers accented keys. So trying to enter a plain backtick, results in nothing in the editor, until you enter your next key. If for the next key you enter an "a", you'll get à. If you enter a character that doesn't have an accented version, like "n", you'll get the backtick followed by an n: `n. So it requires some fiddling to enter your text with a preceding backtick.
Furthermore, entering the close backtick is also difficult. You need to do it twice, which does close the markdown autoformatting, but you are left with a second backtick.
The workaround is to use the keyboard shortcuts which are considerably easier on this keyboard.
- Mac: Command + Shift + m
- PC: Control + Shift + m
