Tab Key does not Indent Text on Confluence Cloud/Firefox

      Atlassian Update - 21 January 2020

      Hi everyone,
Thanks for watching and commenting on this issue. Your input in the comments helps us understand how this affects you and what you're hoping to accomplish with Confluence.

We have reviewed this further and this is what our findings on this bug :

      UPDATE:

      • The documentation provided has been reviewed and the sentence using Tab key within Confluence is no longer stated there
      • We have tested this out and here are our findings :

      In the old editor.

      • We can confirm that the Tab key does not work and that is expected since we have the indent button at the toolbar to indent text out. This is set by designed for the old editor

      In the new editor

This is also been rectified for new editor where the tab key does work

      Summary

The Confluence documentation states that pressing the Tab key within the Confluence Editor will indent the text (https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Keyboard+Shortcuts).
However, this is not the case - it simply navigates the cursor from within the text editing downward to the Save/Create button.

      Steps to Reproduce

      1. Go to a page and edit or create new page
      2. Add title and text
      3. Hit the "Tab" key when putting the cursor on the text

      Expected Results

      It will indent the text

      Actual Results

      Does not indent the text

      Workaround

      In old editor

Click on the indent button when clicking on the text

      In new editor

New editor supports tab key for keyboards.

I wonder why this item is closed, while Tab key (in editing text) can't be used because it translates to indent of the whole line.
Interesting fact, type ' (accent) and tab key. Bot a tab AND indent appear...?

"Alt-09" worked in MS Word for me, but not in Jira.  Also, I tried copying tabbed text from Word to Jira, but Jira un-tabs it.

This might seem like a low priority issue, but it isn't.  Tabbing allows for better readability.  Without being able to tab, Jira is slowing everyone down who has to read text that isn't usefully formatted.

Workaround: use ASCII code to enter TAB -> ASCII decimal code:  '09' (see: https://www.asciitable.com)

Windows: press and hold the ALT key while typing the character code  '09' on the numeric keypad

You must use the numeric keypad to type the numbers, and not the keyboard.
Make sure that the NUM LOCK key is on if your keyboard requires it to type numbers on the numeric keypad._

This seems like a major bug, there is no way to indent text in a Jira task whatsoever.

Hmm. The conclusion is "This is also been rectified for new editor where the tab key does work." No the tab key does not work in the new editor. In the new editor the tab key provides a shortcut to the text indentation function. Would it not be possible to get the tab key to do what it's supposed to do, which is insert a tab character? That is not the same thing as indenting the line.

This broke many of our team's pages, does not allow us to have reasonable, readable text and is a basic nuisance. Please fix.

For me, the indent icon only partially works on headings and paragraph text. I can only indent one level in.

This is pretty annoying because I would like to be able to differentiate the level of detail within the text I create using indentation. I commonly need to go three levels in (if I am using examples, or providing links). On a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most frustrated with this issue, I would rate myself at a 3.

I am using Chrome Version 72.0.3626.119.

Me too. I'm sure it never used to do this!

When using the New Experience, and using Sections in th editor (the icon-based section addition and formatting, not the gadget), the indent/outdent icon is grayed out for headers and paragraph text.  TAB key does not work for the function.

This means I cannot get my page off the left wall, which makes for difficult reading as I like to indent when I go into finer detail, higher-value hearings, etc.

This is a regression.  Pages which I had were able to do it, and now when I edit them they become a mess.

New pages crawl along the left wall.

I have the same issue with the server version (Confluence 5.10.4). I would appreciate a lot if indenting with the tab key was possible.

Any resolution for this?  I find it hard to swallow that you would charge for documentation software that doesn't even support a tab key. Extremely frustrating.
