Atlassian Status as of 11 Feb 2022

Hi folks, my name is Daniel Ayele and I'm a Product Manager on the Confluence team. Thank you for your feedback on this issue. I'm excited to share that we have many planned improvements to the notifications experience coming to Confluence in the next 12-18 months.

Beginning in the next few months, we'll be launching a new daily digest that enables customers to get a daily batch of all of the page update notifications they currently receive from Confluence. We believe this is critical for reducing the amount of total notifications we are sending to customers and sets us up to begin to tailor and improve our notifications experience beyond that.

Second, we are rethinking how customers engage with notifications end to end across all of our platforms to make it faster and easier to collaborate with your team wherever you are. As part of this effort we'll take this suggestion into consideration. Stay tuned to our Atlassian Community and other channels to learn more as we develop and release more of these changes.

[CONFCLOUD-5002] Comment on page via email

This is a critical on-the-go tool that makes confluence flexible and usable by many users.  Though email notifications pull a user out of the app environment, it would be very useful for users that need to add a note quickly to the page.

Since years there are two Confluence System Plugins which are disabled and the name and description are interesting.

            Confluence Email to Page

Converts an inbound email thread into a page

            Confluence Reply to Email

Allows users to create Confluence content by replying to Confluence notification emails.

95% of communication with our clients occurs through e-mail, it's always unavoidable. We don't have the luxury of mandating to our clients that they use yet another tool natively, so streamlining with email is a very high priority for us. It would remove obstacles for users to participate in a knowledge base if they could comment on pages they're watching by simpy replying to email notifications.

This request was opened in 2006, and the statement in the blue box („We acknowledge that it would be a very useful ... we don’t have a date yet”) is from Jan 2013. Probably this was the last time when anyone from Atlassian visited this issue / ticket.

They're separate development teams and so there is a lot of feature disparity between the two apps. Product management seemingly isn't aligned.

Very much would like this to be able to capture product discussions.

E.g. Product managers do not use JIRA reports to engage the sales team (likely to make them fall out of their chairs).
But I would like to share a page from confluence to solicit feedback and getting them to bother clicking on a link is optimistic at b.
Their natural instinct to a "what do you think the product should do next" is reply by email.

Would FAR rather that dialog be captured in a comment thread than disparate email.
Isn't the very first sales point for confluence :
"Capture the knowledge that's too often lost in email inboxes and shared network drives in Confluence instead – where it's easy to find, use, and update." ?

OK, it took Atlassian 7 years from the first enhancement request to the statement

We would like to implement it at some point but currently don't have an estimated date for delivering the feature.

How many more years until it's getting an estimate? How many years to get it delivered?
            Is Atlassian working Agile ?????

Is there any movement on this one - it is one of those requests, many years old, with continued interest. The email to JIRA issue is used many times of day every day throughout our company as it makes it convenient for users to quickly reply - especially when on a multitude of different devices. The frustration is that user gets email from JIRA and reply, but when they reply to a wiki page notification (which looks so very similar), it bounces back.

In the days when people are 'on' 24 hours a day, they are used to communicating via these emails, text, etc as they always have their phone or tablet in hand.

We're not even asking to reply to the correct comment thread in the page. Just add a comment to the page directly...just like JIRA...

If you want this to be an ERP system, used by project managements, implementation managers, sales, etc and those doing the work, you need to provide the system interaction that users utilized every day, from all of their devices, and not make it difficult (have the correct application on their device > login > navigate > click reply/comment > save). It slows down and delays the needed collaboration.

Hi Ben, how are you? This issue is older than my nephew (who now knows how to fly an AR Drone) and getting kind of long in the tooth. It's had a plethora of duplicate issues that were closed and I'm assuming not all the votes from those issues have been rolled up into this one (which might make it look quite a bit more popular).

Should it be closed as "will not fix"? Just trying to set expectations..

Thanks for the continued comments, this is an important feature and we want to put it in Confluence this year. So, I know I said in my last comment that I was targeting this feature for short term a year ago - and we're a bit behind. We're working on a revamp of the RTE (WYSIWYG editor); afterwards we'll be looking at features like this to deliver in 2010.

            almost 4 years later..

            Still not delivered!

Now that @mentions are so popular we have dozens of users a week just replyign to the system emails thinking they will at least go to the person who left the comment. But instead get lost in the either. That seems like like "COllaborative Dysfunction" no? http://blogs.atlassian.com/tag/collaborative-dysfunction/

I want to be able to send an email to confluence, and the address I send my mail to (that confluence is listening with) can be configured on the confluence end to perform various actions with. Some examples:

I can create a confluence mail listener that is set up to match the mail sender address to a confluence user account, and posts a blog on their behalf.

I can create a confluence mail listener that is set up to comment on a specific page, posting as the user identified through email address.

I can create a confluence mail listener that creates new pages under a given parent page, posting as the user identified through email address.

I understand there can be abuses to a system like this, such as a spoofed email address. However, in an enterprise environment, additional external systems prevent or reduce the footprint of vulnerabilities.

One of the major gains from a system such as this is to get a foothold in corporate and cultural acceptance of confluence as an information repository. I currently have issues with so much data lost to mail inboxes, it is depressing.

This feature, combined with CONF-1726 would be great. This is the most compelling feature of ThoughtFarmer, which at the moment looks like a significantly better intranet experience due to this.

            Hi,

The ability to add content to Confluence pages via Email is something I too have been missing in a wiki since JotSpot (which had this feature) was bought by Google.

To this end I've been working diligently the past three weeks to implement many of these features in the Send-Email-To-Page Plugin for Confluence

The are a lot of great ideas in this issue thread - probably over a dozen separate features actually. I find several of them extremely insightful. I believe they're all possible to implement given Confluence's flexible and powerful infrastructure.

As far as the specific feature "Comment on a page via email", the Send-Email-To-Page plugin currently implements this. If you send an email to the email address of an existing page or add the proper "command tag" while sending to the general account address a comment will be created on the page (if the page exists - otherwise the page will be created). Email attachments are also uploaded to the page and a note is added to the bottom of the comment which attachments were added.

Please be aware that much of this functionality is still evolving rapidly. If you do try the plugin out please be patient with the inevitable glitches. I'm sure they'll pop up and if they do please report them.

            thanks!

I'm sure they'll pop up and if they do please report them. thanks! Brendan

Just a note, very useful would be to have the same architecture that is used by Alfresco software (www.alfresco.com).
Alfresco is a full ECM, but we can borrow some ideas here.
They assign an Email_ID (automatically) or an email alias (mnemonic) to EVERY piece of content generated in the system (ie. a space container, or a forum post).
Ie: if I send an email to 423619@domain.com the email is automatically inserted and attachments parsed and linked in the appropriate content addressed by id 423619.

This push strategy is much more flexible than to have a pull strategy (ie an embedded email imap client that pull emails and place them in some space) and doesn't require account setups.

In this case the application (Alfresco) has an EMBEDDED (it is open source) standard SMTP connector listening on port 25 mail to accept messages addressed to their content store.
You can recognize that this approach (embedded email STMP listener) is super flexible and very open to mail archival/integration.

Our task notifications act in this way (i.e. assign a task to comment on a page or respond to a comment) and the user simply replies to the email and it is posted to the correct page as a comment without needing a special email address. Shoot an email if anyone is free to chat as I am definitely interested in hearing how else we could expand what we are doing.

            Cheers,

            Erik

Thanks for the continued comments, this is an important feature and we want to put it in Confluence this year. So, I know I said in my last comment that I was targeting this feature for short term a year ago - and we're a bit behind. We're working on a revamp of the RTE (WYSIWYG editor); afterwards we'll be looking at features like this to deliver in 2010.
