Confluence does not provide a function to change the username via the web or remote interface.
Since it is not guaranteed that users will be stored in the confluence database (eg. using external user management), the username instead of an id is used as the foreign key. Therefore if you need to update the username, you will have to update every occurrence of the username used as foreign key in all tables. This procedure should be automated to avoid corruption in the database due to mistakes made in the process.

Thanks for your feedback on this issue thus far. We acknowledge that administrators need a way to change usernames within the system. Please note, that users can still change their Full Name as it appears in the Confluence user interface. For example, a user can change his Full Name from Bill Arconati to John Smith but currently can't change his username from barconati to jsmith.
At this stage we do not have a supported way to change the username in your system. However, we've documented a series of SQL scripts to allow an administrator to update a username directly inside the Confluence database. Please note that the process is not supported but a number of customers have been successful with them.
We have started exploring solutions to this complex issue and hope to provide a more eloquent way of updating usernames within the next year. We will update the status of this issue once we have made further progress.
