In the 3.x versions of Confluence, if you clicked on a link to a currently nonexistent page, at the top of the edit page would be a selection of templates. In 4.1.3, the only way to use a template is to use the Edit menu at the top of a page.
Several of our groups produce weekly documents. To deal with naming issues, we have a standard name scheme for these documents, and our practice has been for the person in charge of group documentation to create links to not-yet-existent documents to make it easier for the rest of the group, so they don't need to worry about the name scheme, but just get on with recording what we need. Between the removal of wiki markup and this change, it is now pretty irritating to enforce the name scheme.
Please give us back the ability to select a template from within the editor.
