The new editor is nice, and it will become great in time. But even if it will Confluence suffer greatly from not letting advanced users edit the markup. The new markup seems a shitload better than the old one too. A bit like jsp tags.

Why just don't add a plugin which makes it possible to edit the storage format? It would make both camps happy. And give you a lot of goodwill.
